This presentation overviews and analyses a project in which 121 students from six different year groups, and 28 different nationalities collaborate on a common moral project, creating a website on which they will publish their research findings on the topic of climate change and species extinction.

The presentation will focus on how the use of Web 2.0 and OER have the potential to improve student engagement, hence optimising “the student experience and enhance the learning outcomes and development of students” (Trowler 2010, 3). It seeks to show that the use of Web 2.0 and OER in different languages can facilitate communication with a linguistically heterogenous group of students and subsequently enhance understanding and learning. 

Established old school teaching strategies-I.e.collaborative and constructivist learning are being mixed with innovative digital learning toolsopen educational resources (OER) and blended teaching strategies, to foster the linguistic and academic inclusion of all students.

 

The presentation intends to highlight why it is essential for teachers of all ages to not miss out on the educational opportunities Web 2.0 and OER bear, stimulating the digital literacy of both, students and teachers and offering the opportunity for students to become teachers, suggesting that it is the teacher’s rather than the student’s digital literacy that is challenged by this process.

  • tools not toys..but by playing with tools everyone  (teachers and students)learns
  • would be intersting if used with students say from the Amazon who are not so technical based
  • Did you find they utilised the tools in ways that you hadn't thought of during the case study?
  • Is the 2.0 communication also done in class and do you welcome that - or is there a 'flipped classroom' element at work.
  • That would be a great message for teachers - they can learn and be collaborative
  • coming from Analogue to Digital can seriously harm the mind! Jumping straight into Digital possibly easier, less harmful?

I found your presentation and project really interesting. So many languages to contend with! Wow how stressful. I am trying to learn French and Italian and when I am with a group I listen mostly and could identify with the isolated boy. As an adult I had coping skills and the option to change my environment. The unfolding story was so endearing and the kind of outcome (for a loaner) everyone would strive and hope for! There is so much displacement and migration these days that it is very important work.

Sorry your connection problems seemed to get in the way of participating in the module. I remember you commented on early on in Open Studio on my poster and idea for a Mobile Study Guide using Sway. If you get a chance to look at it I'd be interested in your thoughts about using it with your students. It is an easy collaborative online (free without O365) tool that provides content or uploading from your own computer. It also lends itself to Flipped Classroom if Apps or Mobiles are the lesson. Aspects of your work fits in with my own interest in collaboration using G-Docs and I would like to expand them but not sure what direction to take. I don't have formal teaching experience and come from a tech support role. Tools not toys, is a valuable comment (I see above) for me to remember.

I absolutely love your mobile study guide and will review it in my EMA Part II as it is exactly what I have identified as a key need in secondary education. Do you give CPD courses?
