problem - teachers have successful tradition of excellent teaching based on intuitive learning design. External mandate to change to systematic learning design. how to convince teachers to change their practice when what they're already doing seems to be working?
what incentives are there for teachers to adopt technology and systematic design? Time is limited resource. Need to see examples in their own field. Some faculty will come for help - how do we reach the 90% who won't?
collaborative forum as the most fertile ground for teaching development. student evaluation as the tool to convince teachers of the value of clear outcomes, effective design. run as funded research project. colleagues support teach other, share solutions to common learning challenges. 'where people get value out of it they make it fit' - will find/make time if it's worthwhile
teachers have expectations about where they are comfortable sharing and collaborating.(workshops, conferences). How to make an online environment comfortable?
Talked about the challenges, depends on the institution
Need to see it as strategically important and have to be measure on it and rewarded otherwise they won't engage
Also stories of successful initiative - sharing practice over lunchtime sessions, various ideas for how to share with each other and build interest but still huge hurdle to overcome.
