Higher order professional skills, such as critical thinking and problem solving, need either a practice environment or a rich scenario for their development, and preferably also a community of fellow professionals. This postgraduate certificate course for university staff uses multimedia case studies of two fictional universities – ‘Crumpton’ and ‘Mullock’ – featuring realistic scenarios presented in cartoon form. Online communication tools allow learners to discuss the problems raised and recommend solutions, linking into face-to-face classes for those able to attend them. [Alan Staley]
