Gerald looked at the way to develop multiple outputs from OpenLearn OER material.  Have Alternative formats:

  • DAISY
  • Synthetic speech
  • ePub for Sony Reader
  • ePub with embedded audio/video
  • Mobi for Kindle
  • Microsoft Word – often the most accessible as users have already tuned their readers

OU production uses a customised Word tool that places in line the mark-up and can then render into the different formats.

DAISY has some problems in the implementation and standards – limitations in handling links, audio and new forms. However the work carried out prepares well for other formats: ePub, mobipocket, …

Change balance of format conversion from transfer between VLEs towards access by users.
