Gerald Schmidt on the way that OER can be converted to more accessible formats - including the DAISY format but also a whole range of more popular and device specific formats. OER10 23 March 2010.
Gerald looked at the way to develop multiple outputs from OpenLearn OER material. Have Alternative formats:
- Synthetic speech
- ePub for Sony Reader
- ePub with embedded audio/video
- Mobi for Kindle
- Microsoft Word – often the most accessible as users have already tuned their readers
OU production uses a customised Word tool that places in line the mark-up and can then render into the different formats.
DAISY has some problems in the implementation and standards – limitations in handling links, audio and new forms. However the work carried out prepares well for other formats: ePub, mobipocket, …
