In K101 we use module-wide forums to support students with study skills, writing support, technical glitches and financial advice. We also have a Guest forum in which contributors to the blocks answer questions from students. Additionally, there's the K101 Community forum which is more of a social space, but we also use it for signposting help, answering questions on all sorts of issues to do with being a student, and as a way of the module team simply connecting with students. We model and steer good forum communication practice, and sometimes students see it as a safe haven from the more unregulated world of Facebook. However, all of this requires a considerable investment in moderators. I like to think it is time and money well spent, but how do we really know?
