This chapter will introduce the concept of Mediating Artefacts, which is one of the key principles underpinning our learning design approach. It will outline the background to the concept and give examples of the ways in which we are using it. It will describe how the origins of the concept are grounded in a socio-cultural perspective and will discuss how we have applied it to the area of learning design. Illustrative examples will be provided of the different Mediating Artefacts practitioners use to guide their design process.
