A visual representation and collective intelligence exercise at the 'Mapping and Bridging workshop'
Thurs, 1st Oct 2009, Venue Design Observatory, Venables Building OU.
A gathering to discuss the connections amongst the various OER and web 2.0 projects existing in the university took place. Representatives from projects such as OLnet, Atelier-D, OpenLearn, SCORM, LDI, iSpot, the TERG research group and the OU Library.
It's intringuing how using 'conventional media' like pens and images from magazines we managed to visualise and represent Olnet.
Even more interesting were the perceptions of participants and their feedback. I am trying to include some here:

Good point about the pen-and-paper set-up, Giota. I guess that, with so much to keep us busy digitally, it's very easy to forget about the stuff that is at the end of every connection: our bodies in a physical world? For me there's still some 'magic' left there - I'm rather keen on doing stuff with my hands (like making dough, pottery or playing my piano), so I wonder to what extent this may be the case with people that, like us, spend so much time in front of screens of varying sizes ...;-)

Good point Giselle - for me the trick is for us to try and work out the ways in which these different things - virtual and real can be used. In addition to physical stuff there is also the way in which a session is set up to enable creativity - for example the design challenge we ran last year where teams worked over a day to design a course and had expert stalls around the room. Rebecca Galley is adapting this and running something similar in Brunel next month. A template for the original idea can be found here. One of activities Rebecca is working up at the moment provides a nice structure for interacting with such 'expert' activity stalls - see this cloud.

Great points. An interesting idea comes to mind. When your team digests all the pen-and-paper mood maps, Giselle, we can dig on each project's objectives and we could perhaps use a mind map to RQs, conceptual frameworks, methodologies. This way we could perhaps identiify commonalities and pave the ways in which we could offer valuable evidence-based and epistemological contributions?

It was intringuing to see what we can do with instant and hand-crafted visual representations in a physical workshop space. Yes we were surrounded by like-minded collegues, forming similar communities of practice, but the range of comments provoked amazing discussions.
