My Representations

e-Design template

Readability’ (i.e. the ease with which you understood the content)

I understood the content of the e Design Template easily as compared to the other representations. The diagrams showing the best practice principles was clear.


The representation is not complicated. Even though it is not as intricate as some of the other models, its simplicity lends itself to easy use. The four best practice principles enshrined in the template demonstrates the objective for learner growth from active induction to the self-organized learner.

Utility (i.e. their usefulness in communicating important aspects of the design).

One of the main utilities of the template is the diversity of assessments. This includes self, peer and tutor assessments. There is also increasing diversity of interaction within the period which does not limit itself to student peer and tutor but also external interaction. The model even though it covers a nine-week span can be retooled and tailored to fit longer or shorter periods. The e-design template is also versatile in that it could be used for face to face teaching as well, utilizing the principles of collaboration and independent learning.


Design Principle Database


The Design Principle Database (DPD) is one of my favorites. Compared to the E-Design Template which may utilize technology, the DPD is not embedded in it. The content and use was easily understood compared to the other designs.


The database facilitates not only experts, but also novices and students. Its purpose is clearly articulated in the principles which are linked to its features thus aiding designers to develop the best possible learning design.

Utility (i.e. their usefulness in communicating important aspects of the design).

It allows one to learn from the mistakes of others therefore reducing the possibility of pitfalls. It also allows one to know the risk of a particular design and provides knowledge as a resource, which can aid in learning design. Instead of students struggling to grasp knowledge, they can now learn from what others have done. It functions as the crowdsourcing of design. It is not only useful for e-learning but also can be utilized for face to face learning.


Consideration of these representations from the perspective of my documented learning design.

  1. 1.            Are they adequate for expressing my design?

They may not both be adequate for expressing my design. However, there are valuable elements within each that would be useful for my design. This is expected since the circumstances which determine design are varied. One of these factors would be culture. In my opinion this is an element which would be difficult to capture in any generic design. Since culture is multifaceted.

2.         What would be the benefits of using these representations for my design? Please explain your views.

Both of these representations are custom friendly. They allow one to fit the design to the situation. In the case of DPD, one has the benefit of additional expertise in coming up with a design by finding the subject within the database. The e-design template allows one to design for collaborative learning to the point of being a self-organized learner, which is part of the ideal for anyone who is facilitating learning. In short, the e-Design Template will enhance my design efforts, making it easier, while the DPD has a host of designs and ideas which is ready or easily tailored for use. The combination of both would have been great for my learning design.
