Projects for OER

What projects should be established to help us understand OER?

If you could ask for a project to investigate open educational resources in some way, what would be its aims? How should it work? Please comment with your ideas that could feed into some real projects over the next 2-3 years. If your idea would take longer or be more ambitious then still include it!

Does anyone want to discuss the tension between non-profit OER projects and for-profit OER projects?

"Defining the social graph for OER contributors" (project idea contributed by Daniel Latorre) - how are contributors getting and accumulating recognition for the work they do. Is it possible to create portable profiles of the contributions that they have made that can then be used for different purposes (recognition, reward, promotion, etc)

What system should be used? Ratings, points, etc?

To what degree does participation in/ membership in a learing community (virtual or in-person) impact use of OER?

i.e., is being part of a community of one sort or another important for complete use, reuse, and "recontribution" of OER

Demonstrate how a productive combination of OERs ( content, technology, interactions) can deliver a coherent end-end educational experience.

What tools do users need and want, to use video based OERs and how do they want the resources presented in order to make the resources valuable?  And how do projects measure learning impact?  (from group at far table)

"Incentivizing different kinds of collaboration" (idea suggested y Vic Vuchic) - what mechanisms can be used to motivate people to participate in intra- and inter-institutional collaborations (as well as other forms of collaboration).

What is an affiliate model for OER (along the lines of eBay and Amazon) - is it possible to create tools that give credit for participation in such collaborations. This needs to take into account particularly recognition for collaboration that transcends the institution

Sally Johnstone recommends that we work with teacher education programs for them to be more aware of OER.

What are the metrics that OERniks think are important in evaluating OER as a field?

We have a variety of tools that we can use to measure access to OER.

What are the tools that you are using to evaluate impact of OER?

A project using video as a social network based learning tool.  Using social network tools how do you draw attention to the educational resources from everything else that is on the web.  (from group at far table)

"Accelerating Green job training" (idea contributed by Josh Jarrett) - how do you use open platforms to raise up materials necessary to support Green Job training

How can one identify and create the 10-12 most important Green Job training programmes using OER? First, though, it will be critical to reach some level of consensus on what the most critical interventions are. An open architecture, though, will enable people to adjust and change programmes based on their own identified priorities.

Map available OERs to learning outccom.

( This wil help  understand Cost effectiveness )

The UNESCO OER Community has been discussing issues of access to OER over the past weeks.  To expand access to knowledge worldwide, we have to consider the local situation and develop materials and means of sharing that will allow the sharing intended.

A small group is forming to develop a project as a concrete outcome of the intense interaction.

Anyone interested can contact me at s.dantoni@unesco.org and I will link you to the group.

Leading OER projects, like Yale, MIT open courseware projects, can bring OER to more people simply by linking to other videos in their YouTube channel.

More project ideas!  MORE!?

How about a project to consolidate all the existing fragmented and siloed OER projects?

Localisation and translation of open content - how to make it fast and easy - and fun!

What is a workflow?

-> Designing content so that can be easily tranlated (think of open source software)-content creation - translation- validation

Areas to discover:
  • combining machine (bulk of work) and human translation (validation and domain expertiece)
  •  community translating the content, different models (e.g. pyramid model, everyone translating 2 pages, etc)
  • crowd-sourcing it (what's the name of the amazon or some service where people can find little jobs to do and get paid)
  •  quality of localisation and translation (e.g collctive inteligence combined to achieve better quality)
  •  a student-run entreprise: production, acquisition of titles, etc.

A good feasibility study and reports available from European studies on the topic
