Journaling reflections on computer modelling
Help students understand the principles of modelling by introducing them to increasingly complex models, and having them journal or blog their thoughts and findings.
Computer modelling can be conceptually challenging for students, and needs to be made exciting and relevant to them.
In this course on ecosystems, students start by building very basic models, progressing gradually to more complex models of ecosystems or global climate, into which they input data which they have found for themselves.
As they work through their tasks, they are expected to record in a learning journal their thoughts and findings. Their assessment task includes presentation of a summary and extracts from their journal.
