JISC funded project 'Enable' based at Staffordshire University.

An agile project with different things starting and finishing at different times. Good senior management support.

"The project aims to embed coordination between projects within the University, to enable the development of new processes that will allow curriculum development to become more flexible and responsive. At the end of the project it is envisioned that the university will have a small portfolio of product available to learners that can be customised by need. The project will identify issues blocking this aim and strives to enable the university to put strategies in place that will enable the university to move forward"

Project has identified examples of excellent practice in the University but these practices do not seem to be sustained and tended to sit in pockets. Some reasons for this have been identified:

  • Fear of Change
  • No clear 'whole picture' vision. Conflicting projects and duplications.
  • Money/ funding
Approach - Completed a great number of interviews with a variety of stakeholders. Fairly informal interviews with a focus on encouraging networking and identifying issues.
In an attempt to co-ordinate projects and share good practice across programmes 'Enterprise architecture' strand of project started. This strand has identified and drawn up the 'as is' model of curriculum design in the University and have identified a 'would like to be', agile model. Significantly the modeling has identified that roles are duplicated through the university. Modeling so far has been done  at a process level and the project is now looking to focus now on curriculum level models. Great similarities to mapping elements of the OUs Curriculum Design project - would be interesting to share findings.

Great to meet Sam at the JISC meeting this week. I have passed  his mail address to Paul Mundin who is back from holiday next week. The cloud relating to our maps is here  we aim to populate it more over the next 4 weeks or so.
