Intense near-synchronous conferencing
A limited-time near-synchronous conference can combine the engagement of synchronous conferencing with asynchronous conferencing’s multiple threads.
This activity engages students intensely in online cooperative and collaborative work in small groups over a five-hour period on a single day.
It comes towards the end of a course on science communication, where students practice the skills of critical analysis and effective communication which they have developed earlier.
Students have an archive of TV news clips (supplied on DVD) and are given their own research question on which they write notes before the conference. In the morning of the conference day, they discuss their questions and post their answers. In the afternoon, they discuss their answers and work towards a collaborative report compiled by a volunteer coordinator. Finally, they post their report, and they can look at the reports of other groups.
