Summarising the Cold War
Structured tasks can help students make their own synthesis of a complex topic, using many different kinds of resources.
Rather than having students learn from a teaching text, this course aims to make students active in developing their own knowledge by having them critically engage with many different resources in different media.
After a short video documentary, presenting three different views of the essential character of the Cold War, students study a range of resources which they have to use to compare the three factors. They have guidance on specific skills, such as making critical readings and interpreting visual material. Finally, students write their own position paper, representing their own synthesis of the topic.
The notes and summaries which they have made should be all they need to complete their assessed assignment.
