This law course had a problem with poor student performance in a compulsory introductory module which was supposed to establish basic factual knowledge and reasoning skill. Student feedback showed that they often did not understand what was expected of them until their assessment.
So the lecturer created a series of online quizzes to provide formative assessment throughout the module. The immediacy of the feedback compensated for its necessary brevity and generic nature, and a study found that those students who took the quizzes did better in all aspects of the final examination, including higher order cognitive skills such as synthesis and evaluation.
