Research Skills required by PhD students D4: Demonstrate self-awareness and the ability to identify own training needs

By the time students complete a PhD, they should be able to answer ‘Yes’ to most of these questions.

  • Do you know about the Joints Skills Statement?
  • Can you explain its significance for PhD students?
  • Do you understand the requirements set by the QAA for your skills development as a PhD student?
  • Have you completed your Skills Audit? Do you regularly review it?
  • Have you identified your existing skills? Have you gathered evidence of these for your Progress File?
  • Have you made a Training Plan? Have you identified your priorities? Have you developed a schedule of training activities?
  • Can you give examples of deficiencies you have addressed and how you improved?
  • Can you explain how you determine what 'competence' means in any given skill?
