In this presentation I will explore the changing landscape of Web 2.0 practices. I will look at the shift from Web 1.0 to Web 2.0 and more user-centered, participatory Web practices. I draw on a recent review of Web 2.0 practices in HIgher Education and present a typology of Web 2.0 tool types. I will argue that there are also both advantages and disadvantages to these tools and will illustrate this point by exploring how Twitter and SecondLife are being used in an educational context. I then consider the implications for education, focusing on four themes:

  • Digital literacy skills
  • The importance of context
  • Institutional barriers
  • Digital identity

I conclude by putting forward a series of recomendations at three levels: teachers, institutions and national.

I have added a link to the poster, now on |Scribd as PDF. The original TIFF is enormous, probably for some litho process. Still A3 size. Check the @shrink to fit@ box if you only have A4 paper.

Yes, I have now sent off an email to and they sent back a link to a world clock. Two hours ahead it seems. So I should remember all this till Wednesday.

Lifelong Learning. We don't seem to hear much now about this in the UK. Not unless we thought languages helped with jobs.

Adobe Connect worked well. Sound trouble when people wandered from the mike.

The chat audience were only just on topic. The line about

No man is an island
He's a peninsula

comes from which Jefferson Airplane song? Found a YouTube link but it has bee deleted for copyright reasons,  Link to the lyrics added here. YouTube will turn something up eventually.

Thanks Will - glad to hear Adobde Connect worked ok - difficult to assess from our end. I was amazed how complementary Ruth and my talks were, even though we were considering things from very differnt perspectives!
