ELESIG recommendations on where to store your files for reference in Cloudworks

As Cloudworks is not intended as a repository, it is not possible to upload your files, presentations, documents, videos into Cloudworks itself. They must be stored somewhere “in the cloud” elsewhere on the Web and referenced from/linked from Cloudworks in a number of ways.

Files can be:

  • linked from the main “Link” field in a cloud
  • linked from in the text or extra content fields of clouds or cloudscapes
  • linked from the “Add a link” section of a cloud
  • embedded as “Embedded Content” (if on supported list, see below)

The top recommended sites are:

Disclaimer: Online sites where you can upload and store files suffer from various disadvantages and could disappear at any time because of technical issues or because they cease trading or change policies (as Ning has recently), See our recommendation on File Storage in the Cloud, below.

To embed content in Cloudworks, upload your content to one of the following places and add the URL in the Embedded content field from:

Other upload sites that you might like to consider (for the LINKS sections but not to embed directly) include:

  • Google docs (office file types such as doc, xls, or ppt. Also pdf and OpenDocument) http://docs.google.com/
  • Scribd (PDF, PostScript, .doc/ .docx, .ppt/.pps/.pptx, .xls/.xlsx, .odt, .sxw, .odp, .sxi, .ods, .sxc, .txt and .rtf) http://www.scribd.com/ (recommended)
  • Box.net (share a folder with any type of content synced with your own computer) http://www.box.net/
  • Dropbox (share a folder with any type of content synced with your own computer) https://www.dropbox.com/

File Storage in the cloud

Online sites where you can upload and store files suffer from various disadvantages and could disappear at any time because of technical issues or because they cease trading or change policies (as Ning has recently)

We recommend:

  1. Keep your own copy of anything that you upload

  2. Make sure your copyright information is clear on all uploaded items. See e.g., Creative Commons

  3. Upload it to more than one place so that if it disappears from one it is still available.

  4. Keep an eye on your documents. If you know the link in Cloudworks is now broken, please edit it to link to the new location

  5. Content uploaded to Ning is visible only to those who are members of the site. Membership is free.
