The argument for is that students do not have to cope with the demands and pitfalls of real time face to face discussions. They can shape and edit their contributionsm, re-read and re-read resources, spend time on what needs tiome. On the other hand, track any obn line discussion and you find exactly the same cultural and langugage barriers. Helen Spencer-Oatley ran the eChina project and spent years trying to find ways to collaborate on e learning and as far as I can tell, the only bonding was within the group running the project, not the students seeking to join in.
