Examples and exercises in project planning

Even highly didactic procedural training – such as that for project management – can be enriched with carefully positioned examples and exercises. The OpenLearn unit on project planning contains examples and exercises at key points in the didactic sequence, intended to correspond to those things which students are most likely to find difficult to understand or to do. The worked examples concern an imaginary project to produce a directory of services for young people; for the exercises, the student is asked to plan the production of a directory for new recruits to their own organisation. The pairing of examples and exercises allows the materials to give the students guidance on their task and a standard of comparison for their work, even though the details of their own organisation are unknown. There is a CompendiumLD map for the overall structure of this OpenLearn unit. [B713 course team, Open University]
