Comment from Heather
"I'm a bit bashful about posting this YouTube link, as it looks very amateur compared to some of the other items on here! I teach on A215, which is taught online except for two day schools. My hope was that this video would personalise the experience a bit more for the students, as well as reinforcing some key information at the start of the course. I included the link in my introductory email to them."

Hi Heather, I can't see anything to be bashful about.  I really like your video and if you were my tutor for this course, I would feel that it was a personal message rather than the standard materials sent out for the module. A nice personal touch. Karen

What a simple but brilliant idea, Heather! As Karen suggests, it's the personal elements - seeing not only you but where you work, your (slightly dog-eared) copy of the course book and so on - that really work. I'm sure it wil help your students feel that you are approachable. How about making an alternative version for those of your students who've done an OU course before but are new to Creative Writing, or to Level 2?

as Sue says simple but brilliant idea! Why don't all tutors do this? I think it's great that it comes from the tutor and not the course team as you are the point of contact and it makes it much more personal. I'm really taken with this, and am going to direct some of the student services people to it.

This simple approach is great because its implicit message to students is 'you can do this too', it didn't require professional production.

Great stuff, thanks for sharing,

Hi Heather

I really love this video and echo the comments above. I'm looking for a way to produce a briefing for our new K101 tutors and this spurs me on to consider how this technology might be used for that purpose.

Best wishes, Anthea
