ABSTRACT

Heterosexual young men in love: the role of paternal influences on expectations of intimate relationship with young women and relationship practices

Simon Forrest

Drawing on in-depth individual interviews with a small group of young men conducted as part of a study into young people’s experiences of love in the context of ‘serious’ relationships, I explore the important part that paternal influences were perceived to be playing on the ways that young men enacted and understood intimacy with young women. Young men talked to fathers about their relationships but equally as importantly observed how their fathers enacted and expressed their emotions in their own intimate relationships. Young men saw these practices as providing both powerful patterns for their enactment of intimacy with young women and also means of understanding the relationship between masculinity and emotions.
