Using the virtual world of Second Life to teach and learn foreign languages is a growth area. The SLanguages series of online conferences in Second Life, which began in 2007,  is an example of the increasing interest among language teachers in this challenging and exciting new medium. Two leading professional associations, EUROCALL (Europe) and CALICO (USA) have set up a Special Interest Group (SIG) that aims to publicise and encourage discussion on this topic:

The two associations also maintain a joint HQ on EduNation III Island in Second Life.
