An excellent researcher at doctoral or PhD level:

  • Skilfully uses a range of research methods linked to study area; documents own activity.
  • Shows growing competence in own subject area and is developing awareness of alternative methods/techniques.

Looking ahead, a doctoral student can aim to become an excellent early-career researcher who:

  • Demonstrates further development of methods/techniques; confidently applies these in research.
  • Designs and implements research using methods and tools appropriate to the task. Documents research processes.

Note: These skills are identified in the UK Researcher Development Framework – where they appear as A1.3 Research methods - practical application
