An excellent researcher at doctoral or PhD level:

  • Isolates basic themes of own research; formulates basic research questions and hypotheses.

Looking ahead, a doctoral student can aim to become an excellent early-career researcher who:

  • Formulates and applies solutions to a range of research problems and effectively analyses and interprets research results

Note: These skills are identified in the UK Researcher Development Framework – where they appear as A2.5 Problem solving
