An excellent researcher at doctoral or PhD level:

  • Has basic understanding of legal requirements surrounding research (e.g. in the UK would understand the Data Protection Act, Freedom of Information Act, Disability Discrimination Act and equality legislation).

Looking ahead, a doctoral student can aim to become an excellent early-career researcher who:

  • Understands the legal obligations of the profession and can advise peers and less experienced researchers, especially on ownership of data and (in the UK) the requirements of the Data Protection Act.

Note: These skills are identified in the UK Researcher Development Framework – where they appear as C1.3 Professional Conduct: Legal Requirements
