An excellent researcher at doctoral or PhD level:

  • Understands how own research aligns with the research strategy of the institution and strategic focus of the discipline/research area.
  • Develops understanding of broader context of research.

Looking ahead, a doctoral student can aim to become an excellent early-career researcher who:

  • Ensures research contributes to the discipline/research area and own institution and also to wider aims of stakeholders, the public and the business sector.

Note: These skills are identified in the UK Researcher Development Framework – where they appear as C2.1 Research Management: Research Strategy
