CompenidumLD was developed by the Open University, UK and is an adaptation of a visualisation tool, Compendium. The CompendiumLD website provides access to download the tool for PC, Mac and Linux. There are also tutorials to guide you through using the tool and examplars of designs created in the tool, Search on CompendiumLD in Cloudworks to find examples of what others have done with the tool and their reflections on its value.
Participants were not that impressed with the tool and did not find it very intuitive, one person had difficulty downloading the tool, the other worked through the two tutorials very quickly but didn't find it that useful. In particular he commented that he wanted something that gave more structured step by step guidance. I showed them the Phoebe tool which they thought might be more useful and also pointed them to the learning designer tool. Petros demonstrated the CADMOS tool and they had a play with that which they preferred to CompendiumLD. In addition, we looked at the POE pedagogical pattern and brainstormed a scenario for teaching group 1 metal reactivity in chemistry. We mapped out a plan combining a POE and jigsaw pattern. I also showed them the nQuire tool for promoting inquiry based learning in the teaching of Science. A final reflection was that to be really taken up by teacher, particularly in schools, it would be important to link this to the curriculum planning process.
