Proposal version 2

I suggest that the presentation will fit with point 6A of the call - "How to make specific technology accessible, such as: Videos in Flash and HTML 5" (http://a11yldn.org.uk/2012/07/a11yldn12-call-for-contribution.html)

OU Media Player - consistent, accessible HTML5 multimedia?

The Open University uses a wide variety of audio and video players embedded across a range of web sites and applications, for example it's student-facing virtual learning environment (VLE), open educational resources published on OpenLearn (www.open.edu/openlearn), the course prospectus, OU Podcasts (podcast.open.ac.uk) and so on. Each of these is integrated independently, and has a different look and feel, branding and level of accessibility for those with disabilities. Furthermore, the distributed nature of the web sites and embeds means that they are a challenge to upgrade.

Faced with these challenges, the OU Media Player project set out to find a means to deliver a consistent player experience across the University's web sites. The outcome is an online player which is built on and extends an open source third-party HTML5 media library. It employs a service-based approach to embedding, the oEmbed specification and iframes. And it features keyboard accessibility, support for mobiles, transcripts, captions and popout player functionality.

The presentation will explore the challenges and constraints that the project has faced, the development and testing process, and the progress to date. The OU Media Player project will be set in the context of the University's Securing Greater Accessibility (SeGA) initiative.

There will be an opportunity to discuss the potential impact of the project on the wider community, including possible open source contributions.
