If the aim of a management course is to make students better managers, not management academics, it need to help them learn about real management practice – and for this the students themselves are a valuable learning resource.
In this activity, students first write a 600 word report on “performance” as it is understood in their own organisation. They next discuss each others’ reports in an online conference. Finally, in a pair with another student, they learn about each other’s organisations, and on their own they write an assignment comparing the two and identifying what each has to learn from the other.
The assessment marking scheme explicitly rewards contribution to the online conference and learning from other students’ experience in the written assignment. [Liz Daniels]
