This is where I'll record my thoughts and responses to my first MOOC experience.

So far I have found it a bit confusing... too many elements to control - Google groups, Cloudworks and the OLDS website. I spent sometime today going round in circles.

Hopefully by the end of the week I'll be less concerned with the platforms and more engaged with the content.

16th Jan 2013 - Reflections on week 1

I've managed at long last to join a study circle (thank you Chris Basson for taking in lost souls). I'm afraid I'm still finding the mutliple platforms difficult to manage and seem to have so many windows open on the computer just to manage the navigation.

I am finding the content and discussion interesting and realise that I could contribute far more than I have, but that is largely due to time and confidence (like any learner in any situation). That brings me to the issue of time. Snatched moments to engage with the course leaves me feeling frustrated that I can only take a fairly superficial stab at it. Perhaps one of the most stressful thing for any learner is the feeling of permanently impending deadlines and the sense of being driven by the next task without having fully completed the one in hand. For this course, I would really like more time to review the discussions and resources provided by the community. Although the daily activities might seem incremental and manageable, it might be helpful to spread them out a little to allow for greater reflection and engagement with the ample and insightful shared resources.

I am delighted, however, that the converge meeting was recorded for replay. I also have to admit to being a bit hooked on the content of the dream bazaar - some great projects proposed. This is a bit like FaceBook for grownups and I find myself logging on at silly o'clock.

Objectives for week 2. The topic of this week is learner context under the umbrella title of enquiry. It seems to me that there are several perspectives on learner contexts and perhaps one that we risk overlooking in considering design is that of prior knowledge and experience. In an outcomes-based curriculum model often there is little value placed on prior knowledge other than an expectation that a certain level of attainment will have been met (e.g. A level scores on UCAS applications). In terms of my own role in re-designing CPD for teaching in HE I think it is essential to draw on the experience and expertise of colleagues who bring perspectives from their research and/or professional practices to an understanding of education. My objectives for the week: - To consider a scenario where an element of CPD allows participants to synthesise their professional/research identity with their identity as educator. It might pose possibilities of shared disciplinary approaches. - To consider not only an 'ecology of resources' but think about a broader understanding of learners context through a mapping of learning ecology (Bronfenbrenner). - To review the projects and scenarios within the team.
