Ongoing reflections on OLDS MOOC

Extra content

I am excited to be part of a Saide team working through OLDS MOOC.

In general I hope to apply what I know and what I learn about learning design, and in the process to learn more about MOOCs.

For this first week I hope to:

  • Register for the MOOC
  • Join the Saide Study Circle
  • Decide on a course to design and begin thinking about it.

I plan to spend at least two hours every Thursday morning working on the MOOC. We have agreed that we will work on a course on Story Development for the African Storybook Project.

At the beginning of each week I plan to look through the week's activities and decide which we need to do, individually and as a group, in order to get our Story Development course going.

My first task this week is to set up the Story Development cloud in this cloudscape, and post it in the MOOC cloudscape too (I think?).

Hello Sheila

I’ve set up a DIY Multimedia for Teaching and Learning Google Group at https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/olds-mooc-diy-multimedia

And posted on Monday’s task Learning design brainstorm inviting DIY Multimedia members to describe their own thoughts on learning design.

Please feel free to add a few thoughts on how you all approach learning design.

Also how are you all finding the MOOC? So far for me the Massiveness has been a bit overwhelming. I’m hoping once we are all in the same place then collaboration and communication may get a little easier!

Hi Sue

You seem to be steaming ahead. Well done!

I am not sure I am going to be able to participate fully, but I will try and keep an eye on it. What still puzzles me a bit is how to co-ordinate all the learning that people do in the study circle. We have decided to stick to cloudworks and use our cloudscape. We'll see if it works.

Good luck.

Sheila

Reflection:

I have spent most of the time getting my head around how cloudworks works, but I think I have a handle on it now. I hope our weekly system in our study circle space works http://cloudworks.ac.uk/cloudscape/view/2632.

I found the daily summary for Day 5 helpful because it helped me to realise that this really is flexible. For example, I decided not to post anything about the Saide story development course in the dream bazaar because we were not looking for a team - we already have a team. But I did post an overview in the study circles space so that anyone looking for a group can find it, and we are open to that.

I was disappointed, though, that I couldn't view the video from the convergence session. Perhaps that will still come.

In my work I always emphasise the need to understand who the target audience is, and what the purpose of the course / materials is, and then to think about those two things together.

I think these activities on context will help us to define who our target audience is for the Story Development course, but I wonder if there will be an opportunity to reflect on the purpose of the course in relation to the target audience? If not, I think we should make space to do that.

Looking at the activity overview for week 2 I think that it may be really useful for us to try and do all 7 activities this week. But we are told that this could take up to 8 hours, which I doubt any of us have. Let's see how it goes, but perhaps we can delegate amongst us?

I am going to try and do activities 1, 2 and 3 on Thursday.

Good luck Sheila - 1, 2 & 3 on Thursday sounds ambitious :-)
