Makoto commented on my blog post about the failure of YouTube automatic captions (http://suewatling.blogs.lincoln.ac.uk/2013/01/16/tokenistic-captions-on-nss-official-video-2013/ with this useful advice on using transcripts with YouTube.

BTW, it’s worth noting that the uploader of the youtube video does not have to create caption files (with start and end time of each sentence) by themselves. If you upload transcription (just text of the video contents), then google automatically add time for you  http://support.google.com/youtube/bin/static.py?hl=en&topic=2734692&guide=2734661&page=guide.cs

I'd suggest trying this out might be useful to do as part of our investigation into DIY Multimedia; the DIY part is equally applicable for tutors as well as students! J
