Personalised creation, distribution and consumption of TV content via NoTube

If you are based on campus please join us for this informal, face-to-face session, have a cup of coffee/tea (with biscuits!) and contribute to the discussion.  This event will be broadcast live online for every one to watch and will be recorded for replay.

Abstract: NoTube was a three year EU Integrated Project with a budget of just over 9M Euros that finished in January 2012. Besides the OU the partners included the BBC and the Italian TV company RAI.

The ultimate goal of the project was to develop a flexible end-to-end technical architecture, through the innovative use of open Web standards and semantics, for the personalised creation, distribution and the consumption of TV content.

The project focused on connecting TV and Web content through Linked Open Data to enhance the TV experience, for example by recommending programmes of interest to the user, including personalised advertisements. It also aimed to ‘put the user back in the driving seat’ by connecting personal data which is currently distributed in multiple applications, and giving users full control over it.

NoTube aimed to help open up the traditionally ‘closed’ broadcasting environment through the Web’s ability to link things together, and by applying the Web’s Open Source, open data culture.

Our role in the project was to provide the core platform able to broker between a heterogeneous collection of Internet TV services. In the talk I will describe the core NoTube concepts and outline a number of prototypes we constructed including a video search tool that we developed for an OU history course team and Watch’n’Buy a tool which provides a prosumer model for TV advertising.
