The latest additional features for iSpot
If you are based on campus please join us for this informal, face-to-face session, have a cup of coffee/tea (with biscuits!) and contribute to the discussion. This event will be recorded for replay.
Abstract: iSpot (ispot.org.uk) supports and sustains an active, growing community of nature enthusiasts, from complete beginners to world-class experts, who share and develop their observations and their interest in nature.
The website was officially launched Summer 2009. Since then, more than 20,000 users have signed up, and posted more than 150,000 observations with more than 250,000 photos. Funding from the Big Lottery Fund supported development to December 2012, further funding has been secured for the future.
This talk will explain how iSpot works, including technical and design issues (e.g. the identification and reputation systems, the maps, and the API) and more social and pedagogical ones (e.g. how users learn through iSpot, how it relates to formal learning, and how the partnership works between iSpot and the more than 75 natural history societies and organisations).
