The Ideas in Mobile Learning symposium invites either 'ideas' abstracts or 'ideas' for the mobiLearnFest component of the Symposium around the broad themes of ‘innovation, creativity and sustainability’ for mobile learning. However, we have a strong preference that papers address at least one of the following three trends of mobile learning state-of-the-art research (click here for details):
- Focus on new patterns of connected social learning and work-based practices.
- Focus on designing for ‘mobile learning’ at scale.
- Focus on the boundaries of learning that the ‘m’ in m-learning forces us to explore.
The symposium is a research off-shoot of the successful workshop ‘Towards sustainable mobile learning scenarios’ held in Bristol 9th-10th October, 2013. Requested contributions should offer any combination of conceptual, critical, design, empirical, theoretical or experimental work that relates in some way to the symposium’s broad themes and/or the three trends. Places are limited to 40 participants in order to enable a single track event where engaging, interdisciplinary conversational threads will be centre stage.

- *now extended* January 20th 2014 – Deadline for 1000 word 'idea' paper abstracts (excludes references) to EasyChair or an 'idea' to mobiLearnFest component of the Symposium
- February 10th 2014 – Reviews decisions
- February 17th 2014 – Camera Ready Copy of abstracts due (via EasyChair), register for event (fee £135, includes evening meal 6th March, link to follow)
- 5th March 2014 – John Cook’s Professorial Lecture, all attending Symposium are invited, as are those not involved in the Symposium: Social Network Innovation in the Internet's Global Coffeehouses: Pandora, Learning Layers, Design Seeking and Scaling.
- 6th - 7th March 2014 – Symposium takes place, Watershed, Bristol UK
- 1st April 2014 – All Symposium participants invited to use feedback from event to expand on the abstract and submit full paper to edited book or Special Issue of a journal (details tbc, we are in negotiation with Open publishers)

- All those wishing to attend have to submit a 1000 word abstract and get it accepted (these 40 abstracts will be published electronically), a programme will be created that has a balance reflecting symposium key themes, some colleagues will be invited to give individual 20 minute presentation followed by 10 minutes Q&A, others will be involved in mobiLearnFest activiteis or presenting in roundtables and providing plenary feedback; all will be involved in un-conference activities.
- mobiLearnFest is part of the Ideas in Mobile Learning Symposium. It is an experimental, interactive, hands-on, open session which aims to give participants an opportunity to experience the ideas discussed at the Symposium and engage the general public in our conversation.
- By taking part in the event you agree to the presentations, mobiLearnFest activities, roundtables and associated Q&A being recorded and edited highlights placed on the D4DL Youtube Channel (coming soon) so that the ‘Ideas’ reach a wider audience and have an impact. Informal sessions will not be recorded.
- Participants will need to register for this event when accepted (fee and details to be confirmed soon) as well as find the cost of their accommodation, travel, breakfast and evening meals.
- There is a strong chance of doing an acousic jazz set at the symposium! Marcus Specht on drums, John Cook double bass ... we are looking for more players / singers ... sax etc ... if you get an abstract accepted and are up for this let John Cook know.
- Event organised by Designing for Digital Learners (D4DL, UWE Bristol), in association with Designing for Innovation and Creativity (D4IC, UWE Bristol) & London Mobile Learning Group (LMLG)
- This event is very different to the LMLG 'mobile learning scenarios group', which will have its own meetings in early 2014.
- This event is inspired by the eclectic approach of Ideas in Cyberspace Education; e.g. see http://www.ice3.education.ed.ac.uk/papers.html. Specifically, see "Smells Like Teen Spirit: Generation CX" by Cook (2007, March) who makes one of the first references to learner generated context or ConteXt: CX (London Knowledge Lab colleagues led on the other parallel approach, which included Cook, see 2007 October).
- LMLG spent 2 years writing the first ever monograph on mobile learning (published in 2010, but note that others key researchers published earlier than this with significant edited volumes).
