Digital technologies offer a variety of ways in which learners can interact with multimedia and ways in which they can communicate and collaborate with others. A core characteristic of social and participatory media is the notion of openness. The talk will critique the concept of openness and consider the implications of adopting open practices for learning, teaching and research. It will consider how open practices can support inclusive practices, particularly through the use of Open Educational Resources (OER) and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). It will argue that open practices can lead to more innovative practices, enhancing the learner experience. It will also discuss the barriers to adoption and mechanisms for better take up and adoption.
