Twitter is a microblogging tool. You can post ('tweet') messages up to 140 characters. You follow people and people follow you. The tweets appear as a continuous stream. This creativecommons video gives you a good summary of Twitter and how it can be used.

I have found it really useful to use this as a means of helping my Spanish language learning. I am now following a number of Spanish speakers and find the constant drip of Spanish tweets a useful means of reinforcing my learning. In addition I have used Twitter as a means of seeking help. For example last year I tweeted a query about using Ser or Estar and got three really helpful replies almost immediately.
