IET Technology Coffee Morning: Mapping the Deeper Learning Literature using Cohere

Abstract: In this talk I will be presenting some aspects of the process of mapping 'Deeper Learning' literature using Cohere. 'Deeper Learning' focuses on the dispositions and skills of learning how to learn and enquiry-based learning, two of the most fundamental concepts for learner engagement. These dispositions and skills are at the heart of the 21st Century education - and are key to preparing “K-Life” learners (i.e. from early school days, to the current workforce, and beyond) to cope with dilemmas and levels of complexity that will make unprecedented demands on them intellectually, emotionally, and socially. Doing a literature review is a common and well understood task, so understanding how Cohere adds, or might add value – or even change the process is worthwhile. I will illustrate the process, comment on some of the difficulties I have encountered in using Cohere, and suggest some ideas for improvements.

Biography: Dr Helen Jelfs is a Research Associate at the Graduate School of Education, University of Bristol and is currently an OLnet Fellow developing an understanding of Open Educational Resource (OER) design and use worldwide, with a focus on annotating and mapping literature on the theme of Deeper Learning using the web-based annotation and discussion tool, Cohere. Her research focuses on the design and implementation of innovative pedagogies, including the theory and practice of ‘deeper learning’ and the relationship of learning how to learn and the spiritual development of young people. She is currently working on the evaluation of ‘Learning Futures’, an Innovation Unit project which is evaluating the impact of innovative pedagogies aimed at increasing student engagement in leading-edge schools, and the ‘Spirituality, Learning and Personalisation’ project, which exploring the relationship between learning how to learn and the spiritual development of young people. After gaining her PhD, which focussed on the challenge of cultural change for Church of England schools especially given their Christian foundation and character, Dr Jelfs was a Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow at Liverpool Hope University where she taught on undergraduate courses in Initial Teacher Education and Education Studies.
